Understanding Kenyan Coffee Grades: From AA to PB
Learn about the unique grading system that defines Kenyan coffee quality and what makes each grade distinctive in the global specialty coffee market.
Understanding Kenyan Coffee Grades: From AA to PB
Kenya has developed one of the most rigorous coffee grading systems in the world, helping buyers understand exactly what they're purchasing. Unlike many countries that grade coffee by defects alone, Kenya uses a screen size-based system that has become synonymous with quality.
The Screen Size System
Kenyan coffee is graded primarily by bean size, measured using screens with different hole sizes. The logic is simple: larger, denser beans typically indicate better growing conditions and more developed flavors.
AA Grade (Screen 17-18)
The largest beans, measuring 7.22mm and above. AA grade represents approximately 15-20% of Kenya's total coffee production. These beans are prized for their:
- Full body and complex flavor profiles
- Bright, wine-like acidity
- Distinct blackcurrant and citrus notes
- Premium pricing in international markets
AB Grade (Screen 15-16)
A combination of A (Screen 16) and B (Screen 15) beans, representing about 30% of production. AB grade offers:
- Excellent cup quality at slightly lower prices
- Similar flavor characteristics to AA
- Often preferred for espresso blends
- Great value for specialty roasters
Other Grades
C Grade (Screen 14-15): Smaller beans, still washed and processed with care PB (Peaberry): Round beans where only one seed develops instead of two, prized for concentrated flavors E (Elephant): Extra-large beans, rare and distinctive TT: Light beans separated by air density T: Smallest beans and fragments
The FAQ System
Beyond screen size, Kenya uses the FAQ (Fair Average Quality) system to assess cup quality:
- FAQ: Standard commercial quality
- FAQ+: Above average quality
- FAQ++: Excellent quality, approaching specialty grade
At Treadville, we focus exclusively on FAQ++ AA and AB grades, ensuring every bean we source meets the highest standards of specialty coffee.
Why Grading Matters
For roasters and importers, understanding Kenyan grades helps in:
- Setting customer expectations
- Pricing products appropriately
- Creating consistent blends
- Marketing single-origin offerings
The Kenyan grading system has stood the test of time because it genuinely reflects quality differences that translate to the cup.
